“Nothing
about us without us” The third of December is observed the world over as the Day of Disabled Persons. It is observed annually with an aim to promoting an understanding of disability issues, as well as to organize support for the dignity, rights and well being of persons with disabilities. According to the United Nations, this year, the International Day of Disabled Persons will focus on the active involvement of persons with disabilities in the planning of strategies and policies that affect their lives. The motto “Nothing About Us Without Us” relies on this principle of participation, and it has been used by Disabled Peoples Organizations throughout the years as part of the global movement to achieve the full participation and equalization of opportunities for, by and with persons with disabilities. Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga in her message marking the Day said the disabled do not expect to be treated differently or with pity, but rather with respect and dignity. “The Disability Rights Act and the National Policy on Disability are two major steps in preserving the identity of the disabled person”, she said acknowledging the work done by the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Social Welfare in Sri Lanka for their role in changing peoples’ attitudes.
