Sri Lankan hostage released

[December 10, 2004 - 11.40 GMT]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today confirmed that Dinesh Rajaratnam, the Sri Lankan truck driver who was held hostage since late October is now free.

Rajaratnam is now with Sri Lanka’s envoy to Iraq based in Lebanon Amanul Farooq.  He was handed over by Iraqi authorities, who had secured his release and that of a Bangladeshi national also taken hostage at the same time.

The Sri Lankan authorities are making arrangements for Rajaratnam’s return to Sri Lanka.  The Foreign Ministry has been in constant contact with Rajaratnam’s family during his captivity.
