SL Government condemns attack

[December 12, 2004 - 4.00 GMT]

The Government of Sri Lanka severely condemns the grenade attack on a peaceful audience that was enjoying a performance by a group of popular Indian film personalities in Colombo last night. There were two deaths and 13 were injured in this mindless attack by lawless elements.

The government conveys its profound apologies to our visitors from India. The government conveys to the families of those who died in this incident its deepest sympathies. The government also wishes a speedy recovery to those who suffered injuries.

The Security authorities are conducting intense investigations into the incident on a priority basis and will spare no effort to bring the offenders to justice.

There are elements in Sri Lankan society outside the government who are opposed to a peaceful negotiated settlement of the ethnic problem and are seeking to undermine law and order. These political elements are using members of the criminal underworld to thwart the government’s campaign against organized crime.

This incident strengthens the resolve of the government to root out the lawless elements in our society.
