Rice from Myanmar

Myanmar has expressed willingness to provide rice at a reasonable price to Sri Lanka. This follows discussions between visiting Premier Mahinda Rajapakse and Prime Minister of Myanmar Lt. Gen. Soe Win. Discussions focused on economic, political and cultural relations between the two countries.

Measures are now underway to import 2000 MT of rice to Sri Lanka from Myanmar.

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister is currently on an official visit to Myanmar, to attend the closing ceremony of the World Buddhist Summit in the capital Yangon. Addressing the forum Rajapakse said he firmly believed that forums such as these help Buddhists to organize themselves and avert the deterioration of Buddhism.

The Premier remarked on the close relations between the two countries steeped in history based on Buddhism and said “It is the fervent hope and the wish of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to cherish and to further consolidate the cultural bonds that have prevailed between the two countries over the centuries”.
