A group of 129 children from 24 schools in the Eastern District of Ampara were at the President’s House on Wednesday. They were all from less developed schools and were successful at the Year Five Scholarship Examination.

The children were hosted in Colombo by the families of children attending the city schools. They were given a city tour and visited various places of interest in the capital.

This annual event was initiated by President Kumaratunga in 2002 to recognize and encourage children from the outstations. They were each given a bank savings book with an initial deposit of Rs.5,000/=.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga speaking to the children and their parents reminded them that every child has a right to equal education. She said the educational reforms now in place are designed to provide facilities to every school in the country and ensure a wholesome education to all. She assured them the government will allocate sufficient funds to all schools. The President said that every Divisional Secretariat Division would be provided with at least two schools with all facilities in the near future.

The President thanked the National Lotteries Board, National Savings Bank, National Gem & Jewellery Authority, Mobitel and the other institutions which contributed to make the event a success.

National Lotteries Board Chairman Cyril Gunapala, National Savings Bank Chairman Cyril Herath and National Gem & Jewellery Authority Chairman Asoka Jayewardene were present.
