India sends condolences

Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh has written to President Chandrika Kumaratunga expressing his sorrow and that of the people of India at Sunday’s tragedy. Dr.Singh has offered to assist Sri Lanka in its relief operations. 

Full text of the letter;

Excellency,

I write to express sympathy on behalf of the people of India at the tragic death and destruction caused by the tidal waves that struck Sri Lanka this morning. The Government of India stands ready to provide immediate relief supplies and any other assistance that you may require. I would like to convoy through you our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
