Japan sends disaster relief team

Japanese Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Keishiro Fukushima called on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse this morning [Monday 27th] Mr.Fukushima told the Prime Minister the Government of Japan has decided to immediately dispatch an emergency disaster relief and medical team to Sri Lanka.

The President and the government made an appeal for urgent relief assistance in the aftermath of Sunday’s disaster. The Government of Japan decided to dispatch a 20-member team consisting of doctors, nurses, paramedics, a pharmacist, and JICA officials.

The Japanese relief team is expected to arrive at the Katunayake International Airport later today [27th Monday]. The team will bring with them tents, medicine, water, sleeping bags, etc. The Government of Japan is also planning to donate additional assistance for further relief measures.
