Indian PM, UN Sec. Gen call President

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh called Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga last night to express condolences and pledge assistance.

Kofi Annan called at 10 pm last night and said all UN agencies had been instructed to provide the maximum possible assistance and material help for disaster victims. He said the UN is prepared to grant whatever further aid needed to overcome this crisis.  

Indian Premier Dr. Manmohan Singh who has been in constant contact with President Kumaratunga too called last night to inquire about the latest situation. He told the President that the Indian Cabinet had met and decided to donate to Sri Lanka a 1000 crore (over twenty thousand million Sri Lankan rupees) for relief measures.

President Kumaratunga expressed her condolences to Dr. Manmohan Singh and through him to the people of India who lost loved ones and were affected by the tsunami on Sunday.
