UNSG’s special representative meets President

President Chandrika Kumaratunga this evening received Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom at the President’s House. Ms. Wahlstrom is the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Relief Operations. She is on a two day visit to Sri Lanka to explore ways and means of how the UN could be of assistance.

She conveyed the concerns of Secretary General Kofi Annan to the President and assured continued UN support and assistance to rebuild the lives of those affected by the recent catastrophe.

A special UN team is already in the island to assess the scale of the damage to Sri Lanka’s infrastructure facilities. The ten-member UN team is housed at the President’s Office and is visiting the areas affected by the tsunamis in small groups accompanied by government officials. All UN bodies already stationed in Sri Lanka such as the UNDP, UNHCR, FAO and UNICEF are now working in collaboration, coordinating the relief program and are also headquartered at the President’s Office in Colombo.

Associated with the President were, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Peace Secretariat SG Jayantha Dhanapala and Foreign Secretary H. M. G. S. Palihakkara.
