Japan pledges more aid for tsunami victims

The Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is to attend the Special ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting of the Aftermath of the Earthquake and tsunami, January 6 in Indonesia to express Japan’s determination to extend the maximum possible assistance to the countries affected by the December 26, 2004 tsunami. 

 

In a statement the Japanese Premier said his country would provide assistance with financial and human resources, knowledge and expertise. Japan will also grant 500 million dollars as emergency assistance to the affected countries as an initial contribution.

 

Japan will also promote the quick establishment of a tsunami early-warning mechanism for countries surrounding the Indian Ocean and will propose a special session on this subject be convened at the UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction to be held January 18 –22 in Kobe, Japan.
