Foreign Ministry Press Release: A large number of countries from all over the world, UN Agencies, International Organisations and International NGOs continue to provide or pledge disaster relief and monetary assistance. The countries which have given or pledged assistance up to now are as follows:

Economic Forum The assistance has come in various forms: relief goods and essential items, medical and other supplies, mobile hospitals, expert personnel I the fields of medicine, water treatment and purification, diving, rescue operations and other relief and reconstruction fields as well as financial assistance. Support has also been given in the form of deferment of payment or moratorium on loans. Immediately following the tsunami disaster, which struck on December 26th 2004, the Government sent out an international appeal seeking relief assistance and the response from the international community has been overwhelming. Apart from foreign governments and international organisations, private individuals, NGOs and organisations have also contributed. President Kumaratunga met with the diplomatic community and representatives of international organisations in Colombo on December 31, 2004 and thanked all who have come forward with support manifesting solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka in their hour of need.
