Netherlands pledges humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka

The Prime Minister of Netherlands, Mr. Jan-Peter Balkenende in a personal telephone call expressed his profound sorrow to the President of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Kumaratunga and offered maximum support for immediate relief operations as well as for reconstruction activities for the areas hit by the December 26 tsunami.

Mr. Balkenende assured the President that his country would remain beside the Sri Lankan Government in its efforts to rebuild Sri Lanka.

Ambassador of The Netherlands Mrs. Susan Th. Blankhart announced today that the Government of The Netherlands has pledged humanitarian assistance. A contribution of EUR 7 million has been granted to the United Nations to support the activities of UNICEF, UNHCR, WFP, UNFPA and WHO for the affected in Sri Lanka.

The Netherlands earlier contributed EUR 2 million to the International Federation of the Red Cross for its efforts in the region. Two airplanes with relief goods were sent to Sri Lanka immediately after the disaster.
