American President George Bush and first lady Mrs. Bush accompanied by former Presidents George Bush Senior and Bill Clinton called on the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC on Monday, to express their ‘deep and heartfelt condolences and reiterate their fullest assistance in this hour of need’. Ambassador of Sri Lanka Devinda Subasinghe received them.

A Foreign Ministry communiqué says Mrs. Bush presented a bouquet of white flowers to Mrs. Subasinghe in a symbolic gesture of condolence.

The Presidential party conveyed their deep condolences and best wishes to Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga as she leads the country in the aftermath of an unparalleled natural disaster.

President Bush announced a nationwide charitable fundraising effort led by the former Presidents Bush Senior and Clinton to aid victims of the South Asian tsunami. He further said the US is very much committed to the long haul restoration of Sri Lanka and would assist in every possible way.

The dignitaries spoke with all the members of the Embassy staff individually and in particular offered condolences to a member who had lost her parents and a sister during the tsunami.

The party also visited the embassies of the other countries affected by the disaster.
