World leaders met in the Indonesian capital today at a special summit for tsunami aid. The leaders observed a minute’s silence before the one-day Jakarta meeting opened, as a mark of respect to those who perished in one of the world’s worst natural disasters, which hit the South Asian region December 26, 2004. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar represented President Kumaratunga. Presidents, Prime Ministers and other senior officials from 26 nations and international organisations gathered in Jakarta to coordinate emergency relief running into billions of dollars to rebuild the lives millions who suffered in the 11 nations in the 26/12 catastrophe. President Kumaratunga was not able to attend the summit because her presence in the country was essential due to the enormity of the relief efforts now underway. The conference was opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, the nation worst-hit by the tsanami with more than 94,000 victims of the nearly 150,000 known to have died around Asia. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, US Secretary of State Colin Powell and the leaders of Japan, China, ASEAN and the European Union were due to address the meeting.
