Swiss declares day of mourning for tsunami victims

Switzerland declared a national day of mourning and fundraising on Wednesday for tsunami victims in the affected countries that yielded over US-$100 million. 

“On Wednesday at midday, church bells rang out across Switzerland to mark a Europe-wide silence for the dead. Flags hung at half-mast on government buildings in the capital and over 1,200 people attended a multi-religious service in the Swiss capital Berne,” Swiss embassy sources revealed. So far 23 Swiss citizens are confirmed dead most of them killed while on vacation in Thailand

Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Tuesday, January 04 while on a visit to Sri Lanka to assess first-hand the extent of damage caused by the tidal wave disaster.

The whole of Europe also was still for three minutes on Wednesday to remember the 150,000 killed by the Asian tsunami on December 26, 2004.
