Accompanied by World Bank Chief, James A. Wolfensohn, and top UN officials, Annan had an aerial survey of the worst affected southern and eastern coastlines and on-site inspections of Hambantota and Trincomalee on Saturday. At Hambantota the Secretary General was met by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse where over 4,500 people were killed and more than 1,000 homes, shops and offices destroyed. He later attended a working dinner, along with Premier Rajapakse, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and WB Head Wolfensohn. hosted by President Chandrika Kumaratunga at President’s House Colombo. The dinner menu was entirely made up of fresh Sri Lankan fish in order to alley post tsunami fears about eating fish and as an encouragement to fishing community. Annan left
for the Maldives
where many of the sparsely populated islands in the archipelago
suffered total damage.
