The first term for the New Year commenced yesterday Monday 10th January. Reports from around the island say the attendance was good except in regions affected by tidal waves last month. In some affected areas children did attend but were not in their customary white school uniforms and other paraphernalia obviously lost during 26th December tragedy. The Ministry of Education has made arrangements and will ensure that all children get uniforms and other necessary requirements during the course of this week. The UNICEF is also helping the Ministry to provide the needs of school children. The schools now occupied by people displaced by the tidal waves will be made available for academic activities from 25th January. The Centre for National Operations (CNO) has arranged for the relocation of displaced persons and also to encourage them to resume their livelihoods under the Internationally Displaced Persons Resettlement Plan. Two hundred and sixty four (264) now occupied schools will be made ready with the help of the provincial authorities and other agencies who are working closely with the Ministry of Education. The
April 2005 Advanced Level examinations will go ahead as scheduled.
Children who may have lost their books and notes will be provided with
these. They have been requested to contact Mr. S. L. Gunawardena, Additional
Secretary of the Ministry (Education Development) on 077 3166660.
