NGO assistance sought in rehab phase
[January 17, 2005 - 11.00 GMT]

The President today met all registered Non-Governmental Organizations involved in the current relief programs in Sri Lanka. The President expressed her gratitude to them for the enumerable ways they assisted the affected in the aftermath of the December 26th tsunami disaster.

She appealed for their continued assistance in the next phase, which is rebuilding the lives of the victims. The NGOs were provided with the details of relief supplies sent to the North and East to-date by the Secretary to the Ministry of Rehabilitation Mr. M. S. Jayasinghe.

The NGOs were also briefed on the views of the Government Agents who met the President last week. The GAs said there were adequate supplies of food and other essentials.

The NGOs were requested to work in close co-operation with the CNO and assist in the provision of temporary shelters and sanitary facilities for the displaced.

The NGOs were told that all supplies from overseas directly related to the present relief efforts will be given duty free concessions. They were also assured delays in inspecting the cargo consigned to them would be minimized.
