Italian Deputy PM calls on President

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini and Italian Minister of Equal Opportunity Madam Stefania Prestigiacom called on President Kumaratunga at President's House today.

They discussed with the President the assistance the Italian government would offer to Sri Lanka such as the establishment of a plant to produce housing units and also to assist in the local manufacture of fishing boats. The discussions also touched on assisting children orphaned by the tsunami.

The Deputy Prime Minster also the Minster of Foreign Affairs thanked the President and her government for all the assistance extended to Italian tourists affected by the tsunami. He noted President Kumaratunga's commitment to peace and the positive developments in that direction.

The two ministers visited Trincomalee and Kinniya during their three-day visit and are scheduled to leave the island tomorrow.

Associated with the President were Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs H. M. G. S. Palihakkara.
