Sri Lanka’s US$ 3.5 billion recovery drive was inaugurated yesterday in the Southern town of Hambantota, which suffered heavy damage on the 26th of December.

After ceremonially launching a new housing project for the displaced in the Hambantota district, President Kumaratunga called for a new beginning to rebuild the country. She said, “To strengthen the country, the people should get together placing country before self to face this massive reconstruction task”. She also said she was proud of all her fellow Sri Lankans for their commitment towards rebuilding, just 24 days after the tragedy hit the country.

The President commented this was a historic moment because representatives of all political parties were present, joining hands with the government to restore the country. She also thanked all the foreign governments, NGO’s and the main opposition United National Party for making a joint effort to not only reconstruct the country but to improve it as well.

During the President’s Hambantota visit she met the Prime Minister of Poland Marek Belka who arrived in the island yesterday and immediately toured the tsunami affected regions in the south of the country. The Polish Premier’s visit was to personally offer his condolences and his country’s contribution to the government of Sri Lanka.

The visiting PM and President Kumaratunga talked on issues ranging from relief needs to government action to protect and care for children orphaned by the tidal waves.
