[January 31, 2005 - 5.30 GMT]

Several instances of corruption and dishonesty among school authorities have been brought to the notice of the President’s Office in the recent past.

President Kumaratunga Friday 28th January directed the Ministry of Education which is under her purview, to immediately interdict the Principal of a leading outstation Girls’ School. The directive was issued based on the findings of the Presidential Investigative Unit. This officer is alleged to have been involved in fraudulent acts in the admission of students to the Grade 1 classes at this school.

The President also directed that the Deputy Principal of a school in the outskirts of Colombo be interdicted. This officer is alleged to have been inebriated during school hours and condoned the showing of pornographic films to students.

The Presidential Investigative Unit has been directed to investigate the admission process in certain National Schools and submit a comprehensive report to the President before the 10th of February 2005.
