Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has written to President Moshe Katsav to express appreciation for Israel's concern and humanitarian relief.

The letter states: "I am deeply touched by your message expressing your heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the people of Israel at the unprecedented death and destruction caused by the recent tidal waves in Sri Lanka.

I am also thankful for your sincere condolences to the people of Sri Lanka and the bereaved families which is an immense source of comfort and solace.

I am deeply grateful for the prompt and generous humanitarian assistance being provided by Israel. This is a reflection of your country's strong sense of solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka and would be of immense help in our ongoing relief efforts."

Earlier this week, Katsav called on all citizens of Israel to join in the campaign for long-term humanitarian aid for the victims of the tsunami disaster.

"The Jewish people that have known so much suffering in its history cannot ignore the suffering of others," he said.
