Iran has made a substantial donation towards the Government’s tsunami relief and rehabilitation activities. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Moshen Aminzadeh handed a cheque for USD 10 million to President Chandrika Kumaratunga today at the President’s House.

The visiting Deputy Foreign Minister conveyed his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Sri Lanka and expressed his deep sympathy to the victims of the tsunami tragedy. He said the Government of Iran would be ready to give its fullest co-operation to Sri Lanka in its rebuilding effort. President Kumaratunga expressed her gratitude to Mr. Aminzadeh and the Government of Iran for their gracious gesture at this moment of need.

The leaders discussed the progress of bilateral relations in the economic and social sectors, which were enhanced during President Kumaratunga’s state visit to Iran last November. Sri Lanka’s tea exports to Iran and the possibility of increasing the quantity of such exports and the imports of petroleum products were also discussed.

Iran‘s envoy in Sri Lanka Behnam Behrouz and members of the Iranian delegation were present at today’s discussions.
