American former presidents to visit SL
[February 18, 2005 - 10.40 GMT]

Former Presidents George Bush Senior and Bill Clinton are due in Sri Lanka on Sunday (February 20) as part of a tour of countries ravaged by tidal waves. They will also visit Indonesia, Thailand and the Maldives.

The two former leaders are due to meet with President Kumaratunga and other Sri Lankan leaders and tour affected areas of the island during their visit.

The current President George Bush appointed his father and past president Bill Clinton to head a nationwide private fund-raising effort immediately after the disaster. President Bush pledged an initial aid package of 350 million in federal funds to the relief effort.

Clinton has also been designated by the United Nations as a special envoy to help promote reconstruction and oversee cleanup in the affected areas.
