Bush, Clinton, call on President
[February 21, 2005 - 10.30 GMT]

Two former US Presidents George Bush Senior and Bill Clinton are now in Sri Lanka as part of a four-day tour of tsunami-hit regions. Yesterday they called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga. The ongoing rebuilding efforts and the long term US participation in Sri Lanka’s reconstruction programme were subject of yesterday’s discussions.

This was followed by a working dinner hosted by the Sri Lankan President. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, the leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe and several cabinet ministers were at the President’s House for the event.

The two US VVIPs today visited a temporary housing units program funded by USAID and a US tsunami trauma-counseling program for children in Matara. They saw for themselves the scale of the disaster and spoke to the people who are gradually rebuilding their lives.

The two high profile Americans were appointed by President George W Bush to lead U.S. fund-raising efforts and to keep the media focus on the catastrophe and thus prevent donor fatigue. Their whirlwind tour of four of tsunami affected countries began in Thailand.

This tour arranged by President Bush will end in the Maldives with the aim of keeping the spotlight on tsunami-affected countries and to maintain a continuous flow of international assistance. The 80 year old senior Bush and the younger ex-president Bill Clinton are due to travel to the Maldives today.
