President sends condolences to Iran

President Chandrika Kumaratunga today sent a message of condolence to Iran’s President Seyed Mohammed Khatami on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka. Tuesday’s earthquake in the Kerman Province of South Eastern Iran had caused the deaths of hundreds people.

The President in her letter said, "We share your grief and stand ready to extend our warm hand of support in your quest to restore normalcy in the affected province”.

President Kumaratunga said she was confident the courage and the strength of the people of Iran would help them face this tragedy. She reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship and warm relations that bind Iran and Sri Lanka.


The full text of the message:

His Excellency Seyed Mohammed Khatami,
President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Your Excellency,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic earthquake which struck the Kerman Province this morning and that it has caused the deaths of hundreds of your people.

Personally and on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka, I extend to Your Excellency my most sincere condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this sad hour.

We share your grief and stand ready to extend warm hand of support in your quest to restore normalcy in the affected province.

I am confident that the courage and the strength of your people will help you face this tragedy. Let me also reaffirm the strong bonds of friendship and warm relations that bind our two nations. Please accept, Your Excellency, my highest considerations and personal esteem.
