Switzerland to reconstruct schools
[March 10, 2005 - 10.30 GMT]

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will reconstruct seven schools in the tsunami-affected district of Matara. The Swiss Ambassador Bernardino Regazzoni and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance P.B Jayasundera today signed a MoU in this regard.

In the immediate aftermath of the tidal wave tragedy the SDC delivered 150 truckloads of emergency utility sets to around 3,000 homeless families in Matara. In Batticaloa the SDC and the Swiss Red Cross provided 4,000 families with 167 tonnes of food over three weeks.

Out of the seven schools the SDC has been entrusted with, two can be rehabilitated while five have to be relocated and built anew. The cost of reconstructing the seven schools that serve 5200 students is estimated at Rs. 260 million. In addition one tsunami-affected school will be reconstructed in the Jaffna district.

The SDC has reconstructed 14 schools in Jaffna as part of their post-conflict rehabilitation programme, which Switzerland has been running for two years.

Switzerland has pledged Rs. 700 million for emergency aid and rehabilitation in Sri Lanka. Eight SDC experts are currently in the island.
