[March 15, 2005 - 11.30 GMT]

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar pledged the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to work closely with NGOs in the task of reconstructing the island’s coastal area post-tsunami.

Kadirgamar now in London met with some of the humanitarian organizations of the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) yesterday. He thanked the DEC member NGOs for all the support extended by them so far. The DEC has made available £ 41 million for projects in Sri Lanka.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed the government’s clear policy of transparency and accountability in project implementation and in the disbursement of funds. He further said that while the NGOs would identify the projects, they would have to be in accordance with the master action plan for reconstruction formulated by TAFREN.
