Coastal Hospitals to be modernized with Aussie assistance

March 24, 2005 - 11.20 GMT]

Three tsunami-affected hospitals in Batticaloa, Ampara and Galle are to be upgraded. One of Australia’s largest private hospital groups has made an assessment study of the short and long term needs of these hospitals.

The Australian medical company yesterday submitted its comprehensive proposal to the Government and aims to deliver up to AUS $ two million, approximately Rs. 153 million of medical equipment each year, to these hospitals for the next five years.

The aid package includes specialized medical equipment for surgery and training for medical staff. The very modern medical facilities will improve the work environment in these three hospitals. It is believed it will also serve as an impetus for young surgeons to continue to work in Sri Lanka and resist moving overseas.
