Met Dept. focal point for Tsunami Watch

President Kumaratunga designated the Sri Lankan Meteorological Department as the focal point for receiving all Tsunami Watch Information from the Japanese Meteorological Agency. This interim arrangement will be in place until the proposed Tsunami Early Waning System  for the Indian Ocean region becomes fully operational. 

An Interim Technical Committee for Early Warning, Monitoring and Dissemination was formed under the Chairmanship of Director General of the Met Department.

The Committee comprises of members from the 

Geological Survey and Mines Bureau,
The Coast Conservation Department,
The National Aquatic Research Agency,
The Ministry of Science and Technology,
The Marine Pollution Prevention Authority,
The National Science Foundation,
The Sri Lanka Navy,
The National Building Research Organization,
The Irrigation Department,
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Academics.
