Govt. condemns killing
[April 6, 2005 - 10.30 GMT]

The Government yesterday condemned the killing of the Director of the Vocational Training Center, Ministry of Agriculture Marketing Development, T. Kailanathan.

Mr. Kailanathan at the time of his killing on Monday (April 4) was attending to his official duties at the Technical College in Batticaloa.

The killing of Government officials engaged in their official duties presents a clear danger to the functioning of Government Institutions in the North and the East. The perpetrators of this deed threaten the peace process and do not uphold the values of a democratic society permitting a pluralism of views and respect of the human rights of all citizens.

The Government will make all efforts to ensure the proper functioning of Government institutions, the maintenance of law and order and bringing those responsible for this killing to justice.
