The Government of Sri Lanka condemned the attack on the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar yesterday. This was a day before the historic bus service commenced between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Kashmir. The passengers on the first cross-Kashmir bus service in nearly 60 years crossed the Line of Control that divides the region earlier today. A communiqué from the Foreign Ministry states, “We are deeply saddened to learn that militants have attacked and set fire to the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar on 6th April 2005, a day before the historic bus service is to commence between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad. We condemn this terrorist attack aimed at disrupting the on-going peaceful processes initiated between India and Pakistan.” The communiqué further states, “Sri Lanka understands and shares the concerns of the two countries, as our people too have suffered similar acts of terrorism. We are encouraged by the resolve of the two countries to proceed with this historic initiative despite the attack. Sri Lanka will continue to support all such initiatives, which would promote dialogue and peace in our region.”
