Premier Wen Jiabao in Sri Lanka

Prime Minister of China Wen Jiabao is in Sri Lanka on a two day State visit on the invitation of President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Premier Wen Jiabao is on a weeklong tour of South Asia, accompanied by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Commerce and a delegation of senior officials.

During his visit China and Sri Lanka are expected to sign five important bilateral agreements to enhance further the already existing close ties between the two countries.

  • Agreement on further strengthening of economic and trade relations

  • Agreement on economic and technical co-operation

  • Agreement on partial debt relief

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Agriculture

  • Exchange of letters on making sculptures of late Chinese and Sri Lankan Leaders

In a message to the people of Sri Lanka prior to his South Asian tour, the Chinese Prime Minister said the good neighbourly friendship and cooperation between China and Sri Lanka have developed smoothly on the basis of the principles of peaceful coexistence.

Premier Jiabao will meet President Kumaratunga for official talks at President’s House this evening. He is scheduled travel to the South tomorrow to see the tsunami-damaged areas and ceremonially inaugurate the Panadura Fishing Harbour financed by the Chinese Government.

He will also attend the opening ceremony of the new building of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies.

The Chinese PM is also visiting Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
