The Divisional Secretary of Tirukkovil, T. Thavaraja, was gunned down yesterday evening close to his official quarters at Vinayagapura, Tirukkovil. The GOSL condemns this murder of a Government official. This killing comes close on the heels of the murder of another government official in Batticaloa last week. The targeting of government officials going about their official business threatens the functioning of state institutions in an area where the maintenance of the ceasefire agreement is a high priority and the urgent work connected with post-tsunami relief and reconstruction is an immediate need. Clearly, those who are behind this killing do not respect these two objectives. Those
responsible for this assassination will be brought to justice. The
government assures all those working in government institutions of the full
protection of the law-enforcement agencies as they carry out their duties.
