Sri Lanka’s virtuoso musician, singer and violinist Amaradeva will perform in Tokyo on Sunday May 8, at Toita Women’s College Halin Minat-Ku. He will also give a special performance for a limited number of invitees at the Japan Foundation Forum earlier in the week.

Maestro Amaradeva is most celebrated in South Asia for his contribution to the development of a uniquely Sri Lankan music through a synthesis of Indian classical, folk and contemporary musical traditions.

Born a prodigy, Amaradeva gained recognition as an innovative and versatile artist at a very young age when he embarked on his musical career in 1947. He later obtained training in classical music at the prestigious Bhatkande Institute of Music in Lucknow, India.  Amaradeva's repertoire of musical compositions, done over a period of 50 years, displays an astonishing variety and prolificacy.

He has composed music for ballet, film, theatre, radio and television, and has written over one thousand songs. He has performed in many countries and has received many international honours including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Excellence and India's prestigious Padma Sri Award.

The tour in Tokyo is organized by the Sri Lanka Embassy with the special assistance of the Japan Foundation and co-sponsorship of SriLankan airlines and SSH Japan.
