President meets villagers of Parakaramapura

[May 9, 2005 - 12.00 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga after the inaugurating the 2nd phase of Tank Restoration programme in Kahatagasdigiliya made an unscheduled visit yesterday [8th May] to Padaviya. The people of these areas were delighted at this surprise visit, the first such by a Head of State.

President first visited the Sudarshanaramaya Temple and inspected the progress of the ‘Punya Grama’ project initiated by her. The President was also keen to see the functioning of the Computer Centre established in the Temple. She then inspected the ‘Rain Water Harvesting’ programme which was implemented on her directions for benefit of 60 families of Meththiyagama in ‘B Yaya’ and the Community Water Project in the Parakramapura village.

In the Boralukanda village in Bogaswewa the President walked around and spoke to the Sinhala dwellers there displaced by the war during the early nineties. There are 101 such displaced families sheltered in temporary housing. The President assured them permanent housing in state lands. The Rehabilitation Ministry will undertake this housing project. She instructed the Divisional Secretary to send her a comprehensive report of the problems faced by these families.

It was an emotional scene and the President presented little tokens to the village families. The President also visited the office of the Divisional Secretariat and the Police Station.
