Government acts to resolve Trincomalee situation

The Government today in a statement expressed its concern on the continuing tense situation in Trincomalee town caused by a small group of residents, with the assistance of several outside forces. 

According to the statement President Kumaratunga has today taken action to resolve the problems, which led to the tense situation.

First the security of the residents of Trincomalee has been strengthened. Further, the President sent a team of representatives to the area lead by Cabinet Minister Maithripala Sirisena, including North East Governor Tyronne Fernando, Deputy Minister Dilan Perera and Defence Secretary Asoka Jayawardena.

The President today held detailed discussion with the leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Samapanthan, to seek ways of resolving the problem in a durable manner.

A Citizens Committee was formed for the District of Trincomalee, to which representative of political parties, religious leaders, leading professionals and citizens of the area have been invited to participate.

The Government stressed its commitment to arriving at a solution that would be just and fair by all concerned and in conformity of the law and appeals to all concerned to remain calm and to act with restraint and not to be provoked by the acts of a few extremist elements.
