President on official visit to India

President Chandrika Kumaratunga left for New Delhi this morning on a two-day official visit to the Republic of India. During her visit, President Kumaratunga will have discussions with the Prime Minister of India Shri Manmohan Singh, the Chairperson of the Congress Party Shrimathi Sonia Gandhi, and others on bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest.

The President’s official visit to New Delhi for bilateral discussions will provide an opportunity to review recent developments in Sri Lanka – India relations as well as international issues. The President will also use the occasion to brief the Government of India on the Sri Lankan peace process, post-Tsunami reconstruction efforts and the development policies of the Government.

Minister Rantansiri Wickremanayake will act as Minister of Defence till the President’s return. The Education portfolio will be administered by Minister Mangala Samaraweera - School Education and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena -Higher Education.
