Commission to investigate land issues of
Buddhist Temporalities

President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday [28th June] appointed a Commission of Inquiry to investigate and report on the settlement of all issues relating to the ownership of lands belonging to Buddhist Temporalities. 

The Commission is charged with the responsibility of investigating the status of lands as stated in the Report of the Presidential Commission on Buddha Sasana and the Buddhist Temporalities Act. The Commission is also tasked with the responsibility of determining the role to be played by the Commissioner of Land Settlement and the Surveyor-General. The Commission will recommend measures to be adopted to settle problems and issues that have already arisen and are likely to arise in relation to Buddhist Temporalities. 

Mr. G M S Samaraweera, Retired High Court Judge has been appointed Chairman of this Commission of Inquiry. The other members are Messrs I K Weerawardhana, K M Ariyaratna, S W Jayalath and L Sugunadasa. The Commission is required to submit its report together with its recommendations within a six-month period.
