[July 8, 2005 - 3.30 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga was shocked and saddened to learn of the terrorist attack on the British capital. In a message sent to Prime Minister Tony Blair via the Sri Lanka High Commission in London President Kumaratunga said:

"It is with shock and dismay that I learnt of what appears to be terror attacks in London today causing death and injuries to many civilians. People of Sri Lanka have suffered immensely as a result of terrorist attacks and we know only too well the devastation that can be caused by terrorists as well as the suffering and agony of the victims and their families.

We condemn such acts unreservedly. We share your view that democratic values and the way of life of the civilized world cannot be undermined by terrorism.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, I would like to convey to the Government and the people of the United Kingdom and to the victims and their families our sympathy and solidarity on this occasion."
