Govt. urges media to act with responsibility
[July 18, 2005 - 04.00 GMT]

The Government has called on sections of the private media to act with responsibility and political impartiality when reporting matters of national importance, a release said yesterday.

Full text of the release:

"The Government regrets the sustain campaign carried out by some of the private media to sabotage the process undertaken by the Government towards arriving at an understanding and a working arrangement with the LTTE as well as all other stakeholders, in the process of tsunami reconstructions.

For example, The Daily Mirror of July 16, 2005 has completely misled its readers by the banner headline news item stating that supreme court has blocked the P-TOMS. This is totally false.

The Supreme Court has not blocked the P-TOMS but only given some specific instructions with regard to a few clauses of the agreement and certain practical guidelines to be followed when operating P-TOMS.

The Government strongly requests the media to exercise even with a little responsibility and political impartiality when reporting matters of such national importance."
