Sri Lanka presents proposals for MCA

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar presented Sri Lanka’s compact of proposals for the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) funding to the US Ambassador Jeffery J. Lunstead on Friday, July 15.

Kadirgamar had been tasked by the Cabinet to coordinate the process of forwarding proposals to the MCA. Pursuant to this decision, an Inter-Ministerial Committee co-chaired b the Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs was established with the Ministry of Finance playing the role of lead agency and the Foreign Ministry that of lead agency and the Foreign Ministry that of facilitator.

Sri Lanka’s involvement in this project was initiated by the previous UNF Government and has been continued by the current Government.

The MCA is the development assistance programme launched by the United States with a view to assist specially selected developing countries. The funding made available through this programme would be in grant form. Sri Lanka was selected as on of 16 countries eligible for MCA funding by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for two consecutive years, 2004 and 2005.

The proposed projects in the compact of proposals cover irrigation projects, rehabilitation and the extension of rural roads, infrastructure for industrial development, rural electrification, SME development: technology and enterprise development.
