Sri Lanka and the
Bahamas establish diplomatic relations

Sri Lanka and the
Commonwealth
of Bahamas established formal
diplomatic relations by signing a Joint Agreement in
New York on
19th July 2005. The Agreement undertakes to
further develop fraternal ties of friendship and developing bilateral
cooperation in political, economic, social and cultural spheres between
the two countries based on the principles and norms of the United
Nations Charter and international law.
The Joint
Agreement was signed on behalf of Sri Lanka by the Permanent
Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Ambassador Prasad
Kariyawasam and for the Commonwealth of Bahamas by it Permanent
Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Paulette A Bethel.
The representative
of Sri Lanka congratulated the Government of the Commonwealth of Bahamas
for taking the initiative for the establishment of formal diplomatic
relations and observed that although separated by great distance, the
people of Sri Lanka and Bahamas shared much in common as developing
nations and in particular Sri Lanka as an Island nation and Bahamas as a
nation of Islands.
For her part,
representative of the Commonwealth of the
Bahamas
noted that the initiative was the logical outcome of its desire to
promote peace and friendship, develop cultural ties and strengthen
economic and technical cooperation with members of the United Nations as
well as Commonwealth family.
The establishment
of formal diplomatic relations today is expected to further advance
fraternal ties of friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the
Bahamas in the years to come.
