Separate Ministry for Railways

A Ministry of Railways has been created for the first time since independence and the President has appointed Mr. Felix Perera as the Minister. His appointment took effect today 27th July 2005.

The annual allocation for the Railway sector is in the region of Rs. Ten Billion. The new ministry has been tasked with transforming the existing railway network into a modern, efficient and a cost effective transport service. The President believes this sector of transport could play a major role in our goods reaching the global market.
