USAID Director Congratulates Winners of the Achievers of Industrial Excellence

Dr. Carol R. Becker, Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), issued the following statement:  "It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the winners of the Achievers of Industrial Excellence for 2005. Each year, the competition that results in these awards grows in popularity and in stature, and rightly so.

Industrial associations such as the Ceylon National Chamber of Industry play an important role in promoting the development of Sri Lanka by encouraging the generation of vital new employment opportunities, exports and revenue. A stable economic framework and policies, and dialogue between the Chamber and the Government entities on such policies must be an important component of your mandate.

Another important aspect of strengthening the Sri Lankan economy island wide is the investment and expansion of industries into areas outside the Western Province. I encourage the Chamber to urge policy makers to approve timely upgrading of key infrastructure vital to encourage private sector investment and the spread of economic growth in Sri Lanka to the far corners of the island.

I wish the Chamber success in all its endeavors throughout the year and into the future."
