President appoints two member committee to investigate Meningitis deaths

President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Tuesday [23rd August] appointed a two member committee to inquire into the recent deaths caused by Meningitis. Several such incidents of death were reported have occurred at the De Zoysa Maternity Hospital, Castle Street Hospital for Women and certain other Government Hospitals.

Dr. J.B. Peiris Senior Consultant Neurologist and Mr. Chandra Wickremesinghe, Senior Advisor to the President will serve on this Presidential Committee.

The two member Committee will investigate and report on the causes of certain recent deaths resulting from Meningitis allegedly caused by contaminated spinal needles, devices and substances utilized during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The Committee is required to submit its report along with its recommendations within two weeks.
