[August 25, 2005 - 5.00 GMT]

Anura Bandaranaike assumed duties as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs on Thursday 24th August, followed by Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islam religious ceremonies.

Minister Bandaranaike assured his staff he would uphold the current foreign policy objectives of the Government. The Minister added he too advocates professionalism in the Foreign Service as his late predecessor.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of the late Minister Kadirgamar, as a mark of respect for the principles of justice, dignity and territorial integrity of the country which he espoused.
