President Kumaratunga’s visit enhances Sino - Sri Lankan ties

Several bilateral agreements in the fields of finance, tourism and culture were signed today [30th August] in the Chinese capital between Sri Lanka and the Peoples Republic of China. The signing ceremony was witnessed by President Kumaratunga and President Hu Jintao.

Ministers Anura Bandaranaike and Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena were the signatories for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in China Nihal Rodrigo and Treasury Secretary Dr. P B Jayasundera also signed MoUs on behalf of the Government.

National Machinery & Equipment Import-Export Corporation of China and the Ceylon Electricity Board of Sri Lanka signed an agreement to establish the Puttalam Coal Power Plant. Mr. Ranjit Fonseka General Manager of CEB signed on behalf of the government.  

Diplomatic Notes were also exchanged for the establishment of a Sri Lankan Consulate in Shanghai.
