Hurricane devastation in the US
Gulf Coast – President Kumaratunga sympathizes

President
Chandrika Kumaratunga now in China
on a state visit has conveyed her sympathy to the government and the
people of the USA
following the devastation caused by hurricane ‘Katrina’ which hit the
states of
Mississippi and
Louisiana.
President
Kumaratunga expressing her sadness at the magnitude of the disaster and
loss of life and property said “having experienced the fury of nature
ourselves during the December 26th tsunami, the people of
Sri Lanka
and I fully empathize with you at this hour of national grief”.
She recalled with
gratitude the spontaneous US
response in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
President Kumaratunga expressed her profound condolences on behalf of
the people of Sri Lanka
to the families who have lost their loved ones and articulated
solidarity with the victims.
Information on affected Sri Lankans
Sri Lankans who have family or friends in the affected areas in
Mississippi and Louisiana may contact the Consular Affairs Division of
the Foreign Ministry, at 97/A Galle Road, Colombo 03, for assistance in
securing information about the safety of their loved ones.
Inquiries should be faxed to telephone number 4719593 and should contain
as much information as possible, including the names, address, places of
work, contact numbers at residence and work/study in USA, and contact
details of friends/associates in the USA would also be useful.
