Life Presidency undemocratic says Kumaratunga
[September 6, 2005 - 10.00 GMT]]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has declined the life Presidency of her Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as it celebrates its 54th anniversary today. The Central Committee and the Executive Committee of the SLFP had unanimously decided to appoint Kumaratunga, it’s President, for life. They were to amend the party’s constitution accordingly.

President Kumaratunga while declining the move said appointing a life President was without precedence, which could lead to the party assuming a dictatorial image. She told her party members that she always believed in democracy and would only take on a post through a vote by membership.

Kumaratunga observed that the SLFP had always been a democratic party from the outset and that there had never been a life President of the party at any time in its history.
